The various attack attempts by Ukrainian maritime drones were thwarted on Friday night (1/9/2023) and early Saturday morning, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense (Kemhan). "On September 1, at approximately 23:15 Moscow time, the Kiev regime attempted to carry out a terrorist attack on the Crimea Bridge using an unmanned semi-submersible vessel," the ministry said in a brief statement. The Russian Ministry of Defense added that the enemy ship was “immediately detected and destroyed” in the Black Sea. Three hours later, at around 2:10 a.m. on Saturday, another naval drone was destroyed in the area while also attempting to attack the bridge, according to the Russian military. The third unmanned ship that entered was reported to have been disabled at 02.20. All traffic on the Crimea Bridge was briefly stopped as a precaution on Friday evening, and returned to normal after 3am.

The Crimean peninsula, which is home to Russia's main naval base, is often the target of Ukrainian drone and missile attacks. With its fleet reduced to a few patrol boats, Kiev has also carried out attacks on Russian infrastructure and ships using remotely operated vessels.
In mid-July, a sea drone damaged a Crimean bridge, killing two civilians and injuring their 14-year-old daughter. In August, Kiev officially acknowledged the attack and even provided CNN with footage showing a first-person view of the drone. The Security Service of Ukraine also claimed responsibility for the truck bomb attack on the Crimea Bridge in October last year, which killed three civilians and significantly damaged the structure. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the attack on the Crimea Bridge as "brutal" and pointless from a military point of view. Putin explained that the bridge would no longer be used to transport combat equipment. However, Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov vowed to continue striking bridges and other targets on the peninsula.
